What your child will learn in ISR lessons
ISR’s unique results are achieved through fully customized, safe and effective, one-on-one lessons with only your child and the Instructor in the water. What your child will learn, and the way he or she will learn it, is what makes ISR so different from traditional swimming lessons. Always putting safety first, ISR emphasizes competence, which leads to confidence, and provides the foundation for a lifetime of enjoyment in and around the water.
What your child will learn depends his or her age and developmental readiness, but in all cases, at minimum, your child will learn to roll onto his or her back to float, rest, and breathe, and to maintain this position until help arrives.
6 - 12 months old:
Your child is gently introduced to the water by your Instructor. As each child reacts differently, your Instructor will work with your child to guide him through the lesson process and to build a level of trust and comfort in the water. Your child will begin to learn ISR's Self-Rescue™skills each day at their own pace.

- To hold their breath underwater
- To roll onto their back
- To float unassisted, rest and breathe until help arrives
- To perform ISR's Self-Rescue skills first in a swim diaper, then while fully clothed
1 year - 6 years old:
Children over 1 year old learn the following sequence during ISR's Self-Rescue swimming lessons.
- To hold their breath underwater
- Swim with their head down
- Roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe
- Roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool and can crawl out or be rescued
- To perform these survival swimming skills first in a swimsuit, then while fully clothes
With ISR's Self-Rescue skills your child will be able to swim independently and learn to move at his or her own pace toward the safety of the side of the pool or the shores of a pond or lake. Lessons are one-on-one, Monday through Friday
Refresher / Maintenance Lessons
Refresher lessons are extremely important in continuing and maintaining Your child's ISR Self-Rescue skill development. Children grow and develop rapidly from infants to toddlers and young children. This development process represents improved strength, coordination and a more finely tuned cognitive ability. In accordance with this growth, children enrolled in ISR return periodically to participate in refresher lessons.
Refresher lessons are designed to fine-tune your child's existing ISR Self-Rescue skills to meet the demands of their growing bodies. It will allow them to make adjustments in their float and strengthen their swim.

ISR Lessons ARE:
- For children between the ages of 6 months to 6 years
- 5 days a week Monday through Friday
- Approximately 10 minutes in length
- Taught at your child's emotional and physical pace, averaging 4-6 weeks in length
- Always gentle and individualized
- Eventually taught with clothing, because it is imperative children know how to make adjustments to their skills when fully clothed
- Always given with safety as the top priority
ISR lessons ARE NOT:
- Scary (OK, maybe for the parent at first. But it is your job to present swim lessons in a positive light and be careful not to reinforce any negative behaviors)
- "The program where children are thrown into the water" ISR students are never thrown in the water. No child should ever be thrown in the water and doing so is potentially dangerous.
- Easy. Learning survival skills can be fun but it also requires work on behalf of the child and parents. ISR parents commit to lessons 5 days a week for 4-6 weeks, adhering to all ISR protocols, paperwork, etc. BUT...it works and it's worth it!
There is absolutely no substitute for parental supervision!
